Immediate or Secondary
Breast reconstruction, or at least the first stage of breast reconstruction, can be performed immediately after mastectomy while still under the same anesthetic. This is referred to as immediate breast reconstruction. There are several different approaches that can be used to reconstruct a woman’s breast which are discussed under the headings that follow.
Secondary breast reconstruction is done for patients who chose not to have reconstructive surgery immediately after their mastectomy or for patients that have had a failed or suboptimal prior reconstruction. A significant part of Dr. Duffy’s practice is revising and improving reconstructive breast surgery done elsewhere.
